fading little scars
smile up with red teasing faces,
hitting warm water every time we bathe
they give all the credit I deserve, and then some
for making them what they are today,
not like the others who have shrunk back
into pale, unseen skin
my little red faced scars smile brighter every day.
I wanted them once
needing them for reminders
making sure I never forget who I am.
I haven't forgotten
but those smiling little faces make it hard to change,
every day I hope they have sunken in just a little
just enough to keep them hidden,
even my little smiling red scars know we can't let anyone know
who I really am.
