I groan and look over at the clock beside my bed. It reads 11:30, the phone rings, and a smile crosses my pale face.
"Hello?" I say into the receiver, knowing who the caller is. "Meet me in your driveway." is the only thing I hear and then the line goes dead. Hurriedly I slip on my clothes, black jeans and a black long sleeve shirt and a black leather trench coat. I yank a brush through my hair and put on the black baseball cap he gave me last time. I slip out of the room and quietly walk past my grandmother, sleeping in her recliner in the living room and down the hall past my parents room. I slip out the side door and wait. Within 5 minutes I see the headlights of his black Camaro pulling onto my street and I know he called me from his cell because the drive from his house would have taken much longer. He stops just in front of my house and turns off the lights. As I walk towards the car I hear the door slam and I can see his dark figure walking towards me. Tall and thin clad entirely in black like myself with a black hat covering his reddish blonde hair. I begin to run and jump into his arms which he wraps around my too small waist and kisses me on the lips. "Have I told you lately, how much I love you?" I ask him. "Not lately." He says with a thin smile," How much?" "More than words can say." He smiles and leads me towards the car. Josh and I have a special bond, we don't really need words to communicate with one another, we just completely understand each other. We share everything, although most would consider this unhealthy we even share our lust for blood. We climb into the car and he peels out in the gravel on my road and heads towards what we call 'Alaska'. It is our own private little space in the middle of nowhere. A place where we can be alone and remain undisturbed while we engage in activities that most people would find......disturbing. We pull into the field and he parks in the shadow of the mesquite trees that litter this area. He looks over at me and smiles his thin smile, "Are you ready?" he asks me. "Always." I reply and climb out of the car. He follows me to the place far back in the trees where the circle is located and we sit facing one another. He leans across and kisses me gently on the lips."I love you" he says," More than you could ever know." I smile back and reach into the pocket of my coat and pull out the knife. It is a steel blade, freshly sharpened, set in a handle of ivory and detailed with sliver. The moonlight glints off of the blade like a diamond. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his knife, a slightly longer version of mine. "Do you want to go first?" He asks me, ever the gentleman. "Of course" I whisper, slightly nervous, though we have done this a thousand times before. I lean across and place the knife gently against his neck applying slight pressure until I hear his sigh of pleasure and see the blood begin to flow down the blade. I catch it in my mouth and lick it off the knife and latch on to his neck.Sucking the blood down my throat. The thick, sweet warmth flowing down my throat. I can hear his moans of pleasure and feel his hands gripping my shoulders, pulling me closer to him. He strips my jacket off me and tosses it down on the ground behind me. When I am done he repeats the process on me. I gasp in ecstasy as the knife's blade pierces my skin and I feel the blood run down my neck. His mouth is warm on my neck and I pull his jacket off and toss it on top of mine. He finishes and sits back to look at me. What a sight we must make! Sitting across from one another with blood dripping from our necks and staining our lips. He smiles and pulls me to him and kisses me on the lips, the taste of our blood mingles in my mouth, a bittersweet cocktail. He leans back and says the word I always dread hearing......"Show me." Without even asking he knows about the fresh cuts on my arms. I sigh and pull up my sleeves. He examines the deep, beautiful gashes in my arms and turns them over to examine my wrists. "You couldn't wait could you?" He asks me. "I'm sorry, I was going to wait. I swear it. But you know how it is, Robert..." My voice trails off into the night. "I understand," he whispers,"Are you ready?" "Always" I reply, knowing this will be the last time we see each other on this earth. I reach for the blade and watch as he does the same. Looking into each others eyes we press the blades to our wrists, and stare in wonder as the blood begins to flow onto the snow that covers the ground.Repeating the process on the other wrist, I gaze up at him weakly. "This is it isn't it?" I ask him happily. "Yes," he chokes out," yes it is." A single tear slips down his cheek. I gaze at him with a puzzled expression on my face. "What?" "I only wish that we could have lived to marry and be together forever." "Darling, we are going to be together forever, in a perfect way, with no one to hurt us anymore." "I know, my love, I know. I just wish that I could see you carrying my child." I can feel the life slipping away from me and my voice is much weaker now, as I pull myself over to lie next to him and place his hand on my belly.I roll my head onto the side to look at him. A tear escapes from his deep blue eyes and though I know he already understands I say the words anyway. "Josh, you already have." And with that, I close my eyes and feel his arms go around my too small waist, and the last thing that passes through my mind is that we are together finally, forever. Me, Josh and our unborn son. We won't ever be alone again. |
