Gallery of Pain: Unexplored Aspects - Questions
Since self-injury has only recently been given attention by the media and by researchers there are still many unexplored aspects of this behavior. There are questions not answered and questions yet to be asked. Rather than wait until studies cover these questions I decided to ask those who are there: the people who self-injure.
I freely admit that my curiosity plays a large part in the creation of this section.
Recognition
- Do you ever see other self-injurers? Look for scars and wounds on the arms of people you meet? Just have that feeling of knowing?
A more in-depth writing of what I am referring to is here.
I Want to Be the Best
- Have you ever felt the urge to compete with another self-injurer? Have you ever acted upon it and actually competed with them?
Painful Sharing
- Have you ever cut yourself with another self-injurer or a group of self-injurers? Was this in a hospital or elsewhere?
As there is no in-depth writing on this I'll try to explain here. I was recently asked a question about groups of self-injurers hurting themselves together and comparing scars and cuts and such. I had seen this in a hospital I went to but really did not know much else about this sort of thing. At that hospital a group of girls shared a razor (very dangerous - you can get an infection or, at worst, infected with HIV) and would cut themselves together. They would even help cut one another. I wasn't in their room so I knew little else. But I am curious about this.
